Costix Windmill

In a sleepy village in the middle of the island of Mallorca of no more than 1,200 habitants, lays a small but spectacular windmill, beautifully restored by its ingenious owner, and it is opening its doors to host you.

Think gatherings around a long table, surrounded by exquisite design. Now imagine infinite corners where to delight guests, either along the garden, or up on the rooftop overlooking the rural landscape.

The whole house is an exercise of accentuating heritage details. Construction methodologies that were exclusively conceived to run a windmill that would grind corn from as early as 1810. The location of its inception is no coincidence as this is part of the Plá de Mallorca, and traditionally known as flat land (from ‘pla’) used for agriculture.

Decades later the windmill became abandoned after being a nightclub, still a fond memory in locals minds during the fifties and sixties, and then a wood shop, until Trudi put her eyes on it in 2019.

The fate of this place was changed forever, when Trudi was looking for an industrial location that would fit her thriving soap production for her brand Gaia Natural Products. Once in, she became enamored with the possibilities this space could offer, not only for her perfume workshops, but also for the creative community of thriving entrepreneurs in the fields of food, crafts and wellness on the island.

As you walk down this Costix street, and you approach the pink toned stone facade, the double glass doors reveal an unexpected ample interior volume. The vaulted space vertebrates the building from street to garden, and in the center standing majestically lies the windmill, only accessible by narrow stairways, and all the way up the tower of what held the mechanism of this corn mill, now a charming bedroom awaits its guests.

Walking on the steel steps, then on the stone ones, you get to the rooftop. It’s here when one gets the sense of the rural landscape surrounding the little village on all sides, and the Sierra de Tramuntana in the distance.

The views are insanely beautiful from there but in the hot summer months, Trudi observed the way in which the sun hit the windmill tower, and designed a smart mechanism holding a movable platform to be pushed into the shade as needed.

The garden below is an elongated path swirling through hedges, lavender bushes and aromatics, amongst perennial grasses and fruit trees. Dreamy corners around the swimming pool and sitting area, and beyond.. another guest room overlooking the delicate plant ensemble.
